Decorating Tips: Creating Children's Spaces Part Three (Nursery)

By Stacey

You thought that decorating was fun before? Wait until you start revamping that tired spare room for your new baby! You can really let your creativity run free in a child's room, because the more whimsical it is, the more your little ones will enjoy the space!

Times have certainly changed when it comes to Nursery colour, while they’re lovely choices – you mustn’t feel limited to standard soft pink or blue. Most vibrant colours will work in a child's space, and monochrome tones are great for a gender neutral revamp. Try looking up ‘Scandi Style nursery’ and ‘interior designer’s nursery’ for some lovely inspiration points. Always remember to give some thought to whether the look you’re happy with now, will be something you’re just as happy with in a few years’ time – you’re going to be in this room often and you’ll want the room to work not only for a newborn baby but a a six month old, a one year old and maybe even further beyond that.

Quick Tips for Decorating your Nursery;

  • Start your planning with a mood board.This will help you to pick your colours, keep your ideas focused and pull your theme together.
  • Select your furniture pieces before you start decorating. It's much easier and cheaper to match paints, fabrics and wallpaper to your key furniture pieces.
  • Try to make just about everything in the room washable and durable. Hardwood floors with rugs are great, but rugs laid over carpet work as well.
  • Make sure the lighting is flexible.
  • A changing table requires lots of accessible storage within arm's reach. Try keeping diapers opened and stacked in a basket or drawer.
  • Don’t be afraid to ‘think outside the box’ and use furniture and décor that are not nursery-specific, and the same can be said for wallpaper, fabric, and wall stickers. Choose items and colours that you love!
