Decorating Tips: Creating Children's Spaces Part One (Bedroom)

By Stacey

Decorating a child's space doesn't mean you have to scrimp on style. In fact, it opens up a whole new world of exciting design possibilities! It's the perfect excuse to be as bold, brave or magical as you please with your decor choices.

Whether it's a bedroom, playroom or nursery, we've got some great tips to get your creative juices flowing… So let the fun begin!

Decorating a Child’s Bedroom

The most important thing to remember is that for a child, a bedroom is more than just a place to sleep. It's their own little world – their special zone to do homework, play games, read, daydream, visit with friends and stockpile their treasures. So, as you plan out your child's space, you'll need a to keep in mind a layout that will allow these varied activities, and still remain comfortable and practical for at least several years to come.

Naturally the more you involve the kids in planning their room scheme, the likelier it is they will find pride in the space and take good care of it. And really, the true experts on kid’s style – are kids themselves! Include them in the design process and let them pick the theme or colour scheme and corresponding statement pieces to ensure a happy little helper. Just remember, children's tastes do change often, so be sure to encourage accessories that can be easily mixed and matched or replaced if needed.

Be bold with colour, colour and more colour! Incorporate a favourite hue on the walls or bring in bright accents with bedding and decor pieces, but stick to neutral furniture that can grow with them, and be changed up easily over the years with fresh cushions or throws. Always go for full-sized dressers and cabinets that will last through their school years, and invest in good quality storage – an essential for all ages!
